The only standard 56k PCI modem we currently endorse is the GVC 56k PCI. We have
sold many thousands of them and have been very pleased
with their compatibility and track record. We have
tried others and have been somewhat disappointed.
However, many people are now using broadband Internet
access, whether Cable or DSL-based. For this, you
simply require a standard PCI network card, and service
from your chosen provider. Our preferred brand is
Intel, however the more cost-effective Startech 10/100
based on the RTL8139 chipset works just fine. As
far as our recommendations on WHICH technology is
better - Cable or DSL, all we can say is that we
have been very happy with Cable over the past 5 years.
We have tried and worked with DSL and we much prefer
the performance, reliability and ease-of-use provided
by cable. For further information on this, as well
as our testing results on both techologies, please
